Teledermatology at the 2013 State Fair: In Pictures

Zoi used a portable exam camera to present fairgoer skin concerns to UMN Physicians on the other end of a secure videoconferencing connection.

From the UMN Physicians end dermatologists were able to examine images in real time and discuss skin concerns with fairgoers. Pictured here are gpTRAC staff and volunteers, where the fairgoer/area of concern would be.

UMN Physicians were able to speak with fairgoers directly via videoconference during and after providing teledermatology screenings to answer questions and provide recommendations for follow up. In total, 159 fairgoers received teledermatology screenings at the 2013 MN State Fair.

Telehealth Education at the State Fair: A History

The State Fair countdown continues! Today, we take a look back at the history of telemedicine education at the Minnesota State Fair.

The video below illustrates the development of telemedicine educational program at the Minnesota State Fair over the past ten years. The program started in 2002 under the direction of the Minnesota Telehealth Network and since 2009 has been directed by gpTRAC. Every year gpTRAC hosts a “patient awareness booth” at the fair, educating fairgoers about telemedicine services.

The goals of this event are:

1) To increase the general awareness among fairgoers about the capabilities and availability of telemedicine services, and

2) To increase the awareness of skin cancers and the importance of regular communications with healthcare providers about this dangerous disease.

The telemedicine services are provided free of charge in the University of Minnesota building on the State Fair grounds, which connects to the University of Minnesota Department of Dermatology via the University’s gigabit network.

gpTRAC will be in the University of Minnesota tent again during the 2013 State Fair, continuing the tradition. Come stop by and visit us August 22-30!

Teledermatology at the 2013 Minnesota State Fair

It’s almost time again for the Minnesota State Fair!  Again this year gpTRAC will be partnering with Minnesota physicians to provide fairgoers with free teledermatology screenings.

At the 2012 Minnesota State Fair gpTRAC connected 182 patients to dermatologists using a videoconferencing system and a hand held exam camera.  Thousands more were able to watch the sessions in action.  Many of the fairgoers said they hadn’t made it a priority to get screened until they came upon our booth, and many passerbys said it was their first experience seeing telemedicine in action.  To date, gpTRAC has showcased teledermatology, pulmonology, and stroke screenings.

Stay tuned for a schedule soon!  And be sure to stop by and visit us in the University of Minnesota tent for your free teledermatology screening!

Telemedicine: In the Beginning

Telemedicine has come a long way in the last ten years.  In this video we reflect on what telemedicine was like “in the beginning” compared to where telemedicine is today.  This video was produced by the Great Plains Telehealth Resource and Assistance Center and submitted as part of the American Telemedicine Association 2012 video contest addressing the theme: “Expect Telemedicine.”

“Although technology has changed, and will continue to change, what will always remain constant is that telemedicine works.  Expect telemedicine, because telemedicine works.”

See you at the Minnesota State Fair!

Again this year, gpTRAC will be demonstrating to fair-goers what telehealth is all about, and trust us, you don’t want to miss this!  For more information and our State Fair Schedule visit the gpTRAC Events page. Increasing Telemedicine’s Visibility

At this year’s ATA 2012 Conference ATA President Stewart Ferguson challenged the telehealth community as a whole to raise the visibility of telemedicine through a unified public awareness campaign. For the last six years, The Great Plains Telehealth Resource and Assistance Center (gpTRAC) has been working to further this goal by hosting a telehealth awareness booth at the Minnesota State Fair.

The Minnesota State Fair is one of the largest and best-attended expositions in the United States, attracting nearly 1.8 million visitors every summer. During the fair, gpTRAC gives fairgoers a hands-on telemedicine experience by connecting them with University of Minnesota doctors for teledermatology screenings via videoconferencing. Last year, over 240 attendees received free screenings and thousands more were able to watch the sessions in action.

“Many of these fairgoers hadn’t made it a priority to get screened until they came upon our booth. I think this demonstrates that telehealth services can help increase access to specialty care, like dermatological screenings, to ultimately help reduce overall healthcare costs through earlier diagnosis, management and treatment of disease,” said Stuart Speedie, Ph.D., Principal Investigator of gpTRAC. “Clearly, we accomplished something very positive at the State Fair.”

To date, gpTRAC has showcased teledermatology, pulmonology, and stroke screenings, and this summer plans to add cardiology for their seventh year.

“Last year’s event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of dermatologists at the University of Minnesota who volunteered their time to conduct free screenings during the fair. With their help raising awareness of telehealth, we hope that access to telehealth services will continue to grow across the state of Minnesota,” added Dr. Speedie.
