Brian Coltharpe, MA – Director of Innovation, Health Resources of Arkansas

“We built our network without any grant money or any outside advice; not because we were arrogant and self-sufficient, but because we weren’t aware of the multitude of resources available to help us do it cheaper and easier. If I knew then what I know now. . .”

Telemedicine is a rapidly expanding service field: an invaluable resource for those in remote areas and cost effective from all points of view.  But, the process for setting up a network and making it all work together can be a challenge.  In this educational webinar, Brian Coltharpe, Director of Innovation for Health Resources of Arkansas will be sharing valuable lessons based on what he’s discovered over the last 8 years.

Simultaneous streaming with the Quarterly Thought Conference from SCTRC at LearnTelehealth.org.

See you at the Minnesota State Fair!

Only two days until the Minnesota State Fair kicks off!  Whether you are interested in receiving a teledermatology screening, or simply learning more about telemedicine and the latest applications of technology in a healthcare setting, plan on visiting the gpTRAC booth in the University of Minnesota building! Again this year, gpTRAC will be demonstrating to fair-goers what telehealth is all about, and trust us, you don’t want to miss this!  For more information and our State Fair Schedule visit the gpTRAC Events page. Having telemedicine demonstrations at the State Fair is a great opportunity to introduce Minnesotans to the possibilities telehealth services can bring to them and their communities.  See you at the Fair!

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is paying attention!

I have to say…The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment Workshop, hosted by the Institute of Medicine in Washington, DC on August 8-9, 2012, was one of the better telehealth-focused conferences or meetings I have attended in a while.  It was exciting to have the Institute of Medicine commit their time to improve their understanding of where and how telehealth is currently playing a role in patient care.  The agenda was well-balanced, sharing information on various applications, policy issues and concerns, as well as current and expected challenges.  We heard from many who are currently providing telehealth services and the positive effects they were experiencing.  But it was also good to hear from some of the folks who aren’t necessarily that excited about or support the expanding telehealth opportunities.  Only by understanding their concerns, those of us in the telehealth field can work to better address these issues and, in the longer-term, improve the overall provision of telehealth-related services.

As I understand it, the IOM is considering conducting a full study as a follow-up to this workshop.  I hope this happens, I am anxious to see their results!

Teaching Kids About Telemedicine

Last week, gpTRAC partnered with the Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences to lead an informational training on telemedicine for middle school students interested in the health sciences. The training was part of a 3 day camp called “R-COOL Scrubs Academy,” where students from across North Dakota gather to participate in hands-on activities and engage in experiential learning with health professionals.

This year, telemedicine was the theme for the Scrubs Academy Health IT session.  During each one hour session, students connected to gpTRAC via videoconferencing for an interactive lecture on telemedicine including a mock telemedicine consultation, trivia, and a design competition where students applied their new knowledge to innovating telemedicine and mhealth technologies.

Here is a short video shot by the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center, who stopped by to capture some of the fun:

gpTRAC offers similar trainings for a variety of programs and organizations. If you are interested in more information, contact us here or call us at 888-239-7092.

Are you looking for funding for your telemedicine project?

There are several ways to get funding for telemedicine. One of them is video conferencing vendors. Both Tandberg and Polycom offer grant advice, grant writing assistance and grant application submission services to any nonprofit organization that is seeking to implement a telecommunications solution.
